The Veil launched its production brewery and taproom in Richmond's Scott's Addition neighborhood in 2016.
The production space itself tells a story: carved out of a former church and an old office building once part of the Central Coca-Cola bottling plant, The Veil took root in Richmond's evolving landscape.
It became part of a wider transformation in American craft beer and a place where our artistic intent, genuine hospitality, and a willingness to take risks has helped expand the idea of what a brewery could look and feel like.
Our name traces back to a conversation between Head Brewer and Co-Founder Matt Tarpey and Jean Van Roy of Cantillon, during an early January visit to the legendary Brussels brewery.
The two found themselves talking about pellicles; the thin biological film that forms on the surface of beer as it rests and transforms. Van Roy mentioned that friends in Italy's natural wine world had a word for this living layer: The Veil. When the time came, it felt like the only right name.
The range has always been intentional: intensely hopped ales, fruit-forward sours, spontaneous and mixed-fermentation projects, refined and crisp lagers and pilsners, and rich barrel-aged offerings. Breadth isn't a side effect here, it's the whole point.
The rooftop koelschip room stands as a tangible expression of that ethos. Designed to honor brewing tradition and a place for our modern curiosity to share the same air. The beer names carry that same spirit. Playful, referential, a little irreverent.
What comes next is always shaped by the question of what hasn't been tried yet.
